I was reading an article written by Naddem F Paracha, titled, “Fearing Diversity”. And though I am not much of his fan this was a particularly interesting piece. He writes about how the state has time and again tried to kill ethnic culture in the name of nationalism, patriotism and faith.
I remember as a child being taught in school that we all are Pakistanis first and then Sindhi, Pathan, Balochi or Punjabi ( the term Mohajir was never really included then). Patriotism is a good thing, but only when the groups that constitute a nation are satisfied. Neglecting one particular area for years, and then blaming foreign parties for manipulating the conflicts there will not exactly serve “national interests”.
Our provinces make up a federation, and unless the bricks in the walls are firmly positioned the wall will fall down. Identifying problems and dealing with them is important, before minor issues turn into large militancies.
Underneath in the comment area a reader proclaimed
“Before partition when sindhi hindus and sindhi muslims were living together, muslims were celebrating holy and diwali where as hindus were seen celebrating Eid. problem started afterwards.”
So if celebrating Diwali, Christmas, Eid and Holy together is a solution to all our problems, let’s start doing that!!!!
I doubt it would make much difference. 🙂
